Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Students' unionism plays an important role in advocating for the rights and welfare of students, organizing campaigns, and addressing issues such as academic freedom, infrastructure, and student welfare. In Jimeta, the role of digital media in facilitating student union activities has become increasingly significant. Social media platforms, blogs, and other digital tools provide students' unions with platforms to organize, mobilize, and communicate with a wider audience. This study will examine the influence of digital media on students’ unionism in Jimeta LGA, Adamawa State, focusing on how digital media is transforming the way student unions operate, engage with their members, and advocate for change.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media provides significant opportunities for student unions to reach larger audiences, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how digital media influences student activism and union activities in rural areas like Jimeta. Challenges such as digital illiteracy, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to technology may hinder the effectiveness of digital media in student unionism. This study will explore how digital media has influenced student union activities in Jimeta, focusing on its impact, opportunities, and limitations.
